Reading Sessions: Overview and Schedule

*Please note the Reading Sessions have been relocated from Lyon Hall to Bogart Hall.

The sight-reading sessions have been a regular feature of the IDRS conferences since the Madison conference in 1999.  The sessions are designed to be fun and stress-free, yet sufficiently challenging to be musically satisfying.  An extensive library of hundreds of tunes in many styles and with many different combinations of double reed instruments is available to facilitate large and small groups of different ability levels.  This allows the leaders to select level-appropriate music for the instrumentation present at each session.  Every effort is made to challenge advanced players and encourage less-experienced players.   New works are added to the library each year by purchase or by donation from composers, arrangers, and publishers, so those who have been there in previous years will find interesting new works as well as old favorites.

The sessions are run in a very informal atmosphere.  We encourage you to attend as many or as few as you wish.  Please arrive a few minutes early if possible, as this facilitates formation of appropriate groups of players.  If you have a pre-formed group that would like to sight-read together, we are also glad for you to come and we will provide you with a room and some music.  We also encourage any composers or arrangers who have new works available at the conference to bring them to a session for reading.

Some more information about the sessions:  They will be located in Bogart Hall, which is very near to all other conference activities.  The meeting place for the sessions will be clearly marked at the entrances to Bogart Hall.

We do have one problem with which conference attendees can help:  There are not enough music stands at Ithaca College for all conference activities.  So we are asking anyone who can do so to bring music stands to leave in the reading rooms for the duration of the conference.  Please label each part of each stand with your name.  The stands will not be allowed out of the reading group rooms during the conference and will be returned to you on Saturday.

For any questions about the above, or any other information about the reading sessions, please feel free to contact Glenn Harman by e-mail at Harman.Glenn@mayo.edu
See you in Ithaca!!
